Understanding the types of plans
A dental preferred provider organization (PPO)Dental plan uses a network of Dentist you can choose from. These Dentist have agreed to charge reduced rates for you services. When you use a PPO you have the ability of knowing in advance the most your dental work may cost. You will also be able to keep your out of pocket cost down as long as you use a Dentist that is in your PPO network. You may use a dentist that is outside of the network but you will most likely see additional charges for their services. PPO Dental plans are a very good option as long as your Dentist is part of the Network of the plan you are interested in, otherwise you may want to consider an Indemnity plan.
Typically with PPO plans you will be able to access your benefits right away for preventive services (i.e. Cleanings, exams), have a 12 month waiting period for major services and a 3 to 6 month waiting period for basic services (i.e. Fillings). Your benefit maximum per calendar year is usually $1,000 to $2,000, and you will have an annual deductible and coinsurance ( i.e. Insurance covers 80% and you are responsible for 20%).
Indemnity Plans allow you to use any Dentist as there is no network. These type of plans typically pay a fixed amount for services at "Usual, Customary, and Reasonable" (UCR) and will have waiting periods and deductible similar to PPO plans. These plans are a good option for someone who has a Dentist that is not part of a PPO network.
Dental Health Maintenance Organizations DHMO plans or HMO plans require you to see Only Dentist that are in your Networks plan. Your access to specialist only comes from a referral from your primary Dentist. Although they usually offer unlimited benefits, no waiting periods, and small copays there are very few Dentist to choose from. Most Dentist do not accept these types of plans. if you need a plan right away and do not mind having very few Dentist to choose from which could require going outside of your neighborhood this may be a plan that works well for you.
